What is Dementia?

Dementia Is Not a Normal Part of Aging.

Dementia refers to a set of symptoms caused by damage to brain cells. People with dementia experience a gradual decline in cognitive functions such as memory, language, visual-spatial abilities, executive functioning, calculation, and decision-making. These changes can significantly affect their daily life, behavior, and emotions. Dementia can be caused by one or more different diseases, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common.

Currently, one person is diagnosed with dementia every three seconds globally. In Hong Kong, one in every ten people aged 60 or above has dementia, and the prevalence rises to one in two among those aged 85 or older. This growing concern deserves our full attention.
